The University of Northampton is supporting a national exhibition titled ‘We Were There… Remembering Those Who Served’, which tracks the contributions of Black and Asian soldiers, sailors, airmen and women in the defence of Britain over 200 years.

The free event takes place at the Northampton Guildhall from 3-6 March 2010, and is open as follows: Wednesday 3 March 1pm-4pm; Thursday 4 March 10am-4pm, 6-8pm; Friday 5 March 10am-4pm; Saturday 6 March 10am-1pm.

Created by the Ministry of Defence, the Exhibition is hosted in Northampton by the Northamptonshire Black History Association and sponsored by Northampton Borough Council and local businesses. The event will feature activities ranging from Bollywood dancers, music from Northampton Troopers, a children’s performance from the Wellingborough African Caribbean Association, and speakers from the Army.

The exhibition will be officially opened at 1pm on Wednesday 3 March by the Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, Lady Juliet Townsend.

Julia Bush, Research Associate for The University of Northampton’s School of Social Sciences, explained:

“The University of Northampton is a major sponsor of the Northamptonshire Black History Association - an educational community charity that researches and promotes Black British history - and we are very proud to participate in this special event.

“In addition the University will provide information at the exhibition about our range of undergraduate level and public access Black British History courses. Many of the exhibition organisers have already successfully completed these University courses, which are run in partnership with Northamptonshire Black History Association.”
