A major national conference at The University of Northampton this month will bring together researchers who are examining alcohol use by students and young people.

The conference will feature 21 academic speakers from international and nationwide universities, presenting papers on topics such as ‘An intervention to reduce alcohol consumption in undergraduate students using implementation intentions and mental simulations: a cross-national study’, ‘Youth, drink and the city; 1950s to the 2000s’, ‘Student choices and alcohol matters’ and ‘The promotion of sensible drinking amongst students in Higher Education Institutions in the South West Region: a snapshot of current practice’.

The conference is being organised by staff in The University of Northampton’s School of Social Sciences.  Conference convenor , Dr Gillian Penny explains more:

“Binge drinking and excessive alcohol consumption by young people is a national issue and one which has implications for students and staff in the university sector.  Researchers at The University of Northampton have been undertaking a research project on Student Choice and Alcohol Use, funded by the Alcohol Education and Research Council (AERC), and the outcomes will be presented at this conference, together with findings from other national and international research projects.

“The conference will serve as an opportunity for influential researchers in this field to share their knowledge with each other, with other academics and with representatives from a range of bodies such as student welfare and counselling services, alcohol and drug agencies, the NHS, the police, county councils and the licensing trade.”

The conference runs from 9:15am – 5:30pm on Tuesday 30 March 2010 at Sunley Management Centre, The University of Northampton’s Park Campus.

Alcohol use by students is a tradition.

I only failed to get home once.  I woke up sleeping under a tree the following morning
