Budding student fashion designers have until Friday 23 April 2010 to enter an annual competition run by The University of Northampton.
The University’s Fashion Show Schools and Colleges Competition is now in its fifth annual year. The brief for 2010 is to create a special occasion garment which is inspired by the concept of ‘eco-luxury’; a sustainable item which needs to live and work harmoniously and in synergy with our environment – ‘Emerge:Blossom’.
Key words for the 2010 competition are: growth; expansion; confidence; roots; proliferate; layer; holistic; sustain and trace.
Participants need to submit four A3 illustration pages that demonstrate their design journey and which illustrates their final concept. They will also need to manufacture one completed size 12 garment (or equivalent men’s outfit) and submit to the University by Friday 23 April 2009.
There will be three categories of entry – Years 10 - 11, Years 12 - 13, and FE Colleges (National Diploma and Foundation Course Students), with an outright winner in each category and a runner-up. Judging will take place on Wednesday 5 May 2010 by a panel of University Fashion staff and sponsors of the University’s Graduate Fashion Show 2010.
First prize for both categories will be an exciting afternoon VIP package to The University of Northampton’s annual Fashion Show which takes place on 16 June 2010 at the prestigious Royal & Derngate in Northampton. The winners will have their outfits displayed at the event, take in lunch with VIPs, receive a bag of fashion goodies and have a trophy presented to them on the catwalk. Runners-up will also receive the VIP package to the afternoon Fashion Show and a Certificate of Achievement to add to their personal portfolio.
The winners of the 2009 University Fashion Show Schools Competition were Jade Willis of Cedars Upper School, Leighton Buzzard and Shelley Dwight of Aylesbury High School who took inspiration from the brief which was to create a special occasion garment using ‘up-cycled’ materials; sustainable and ethical fabric and manufacturing which results in a high-end product.
The University’s annual Fashion Show is one of the highlights of the academic year, attracting an audience of around 2,000 at an afternoon and evening show. Headline sponsorship comes from internationally renowned haircare product services company, Schwarzkopf, in partnership with Hensmans, one of Northamptonshire’s premier hair salons.
The theme for the 2010 show will be ‘Emerge:Blossom’, once more featuring top London models and a glamorous atmosphere. Fashion at The University of Northampton continues to grow its reputation, with graduates taking part in London Graduate Fashion Week and going on to work for top industry names.
All schools and colleges entering the competition will receive 10 free tickets for the afternoon Fashion Show (normal price: £2 each for students and their teachers).
