The University of Northampton will be marking Holocaust Memorial Day with a series of events and activities on Wednesday 27 January at Park Campus.
A commemorative event will take place at 1pm by the Anne Frank/Stephen Lawrence tree with readings from the University’s Vice Chancellor Ann Tate, Students’ Union President Eamon Lindsell, Heather Greenwood from the Chaplaincy team and two History students who have recently returned from a visit to the Nazi extermination camp at Balzac. The event is open to all and members of the public are welcome to attend.
There will be a keynote lecture from 10 – 11am by Professor Aristotle Kallis on The Holocaust 1939 – 42. This will then be followed by a series of seminars by international scholars, running from 11:15am – 12:30pm. These are:
- Daniel Tilles – International Responses to Genocide: Britain and America’s Reactions to the Holocaust
- Chris Webb – Belzec in Photographs
- Marcus Roberts – Unknown Camps in France
- Melvyn Conroy – Nazi ‘Euthanasia’ and Genocide
- Dr Robin O’Neill – Belzec: Stepping Stone to Genocide?
From 1:45 – 3:00pm, there will also be seminars held by members of Northamptonshire’s community on the Holocaust’s legacy:
- Nicholas Hedges – Belzec: An Artist’s View
- Delaine le Bas – Art and the Nazi Genocide of Travelers
- First Year History students – Experiences of Belzec
- Paul Crofts – The Psychology of Genocide
- Sean Silver – The Importance of Remembrance
The day concludes with a panel discussion and audience questions at 4:00pm, taking place in Holdenby Lecture Theatre 1.
